When I started middle school, there was another girl in my grade that was also named Sonya. Though I am Sonia spelled with an “I,” I would always get confused when classmates or teachers called out my name because I wasn’t sure if they were calling for me or the other Sonya.
My friend suggested the nickname “Sunny” for me. She thought I was bright and always happy, just like the sun and weather. The name has stuck with me. My personality, my professional aspirations, and lifestyle all work off of my nickname. I want to be the light that makes a difference in the lives of people around me.
As an avid movie watcher and reality TV consumer, I found myself in the entertainment world as a publicist. I have always been passionate about Asian representation on the big screen, and now I am living the dream of uplifting AAPI and multicultural communities. I owe it all to my professors and classmates at USC for their support and guidance. I will continue to fight on!
